Let’s hang cabinets!  There’s a real for storage in our mud/craft room next to our kitchen. To solve that little puzzle without spending a whole lot of money, we went with a pair of 24″ wide wall cabinets from ikea.  Akurum?  What’s akurum with you?

As with everything at Ikea, their cabinets come flat packed and some (all) assembly is required.  It’s pretty simple… especially if you forgo the stupid little tacks they send you for holding the back panel on and use your nail gun.

After you build the boxes, you attach this one rail to the wall that the cabinets hang from.  I actually found some studs this time… miracle of miracles.

Once the cabinets are hung from the rail, the hinges get attached to the boxes…

…and to the doors.  Ikea did us a real solid and improved the design of the hinges big time.  The instructions are terrible – so it’s not that clear that you don’t need to use screws for attaching them, but you don’t, so you can stop looking through the plastic bags that you threw out for them.  The new design has a lever that swings down and expands some kind of clasp in the unit, grabbing into the door.  Great design… terrible instructions.

Mary the two halves of the hinges together to hang the doors, and bam… you’ve got some cabinets.

…and we have mad storage (times two) for our craft supplies and what not.
